Green Bay Fire Department prepares for summer swimmers

GREEN BAY, Wis. WFRV – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 5,000 Americans drown each year; first responders and lifeguards in Green Bay are training to prevent that from happening here.

Green Bay Metro firefighters spent time at Joannes Aquatic Center with lifeguards, reviewing safety protocols in case of a real-life emergency.

“There are so many components that go into emergencies at the pool that you can talk about it and train all day long, but until you actually see those lights coming down the street and see the paramedics come in and do what they do, they’re not going to understand,” explained Ann Moeller Green Bay Recreation Supervisor.

In fact, policies have been created to prevent parents from losing track of their children.

“Parents are the first line of defense, so if you’re coming to the pool with your children, it is important that you stay in the pool with your week and non-swimmers. So this year, any child 7 and under who comes to our facility, a parent is required to be in the pool within arm’s reach at all times,” explained Moeller.

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department trains with lifeguards at least once a year.
