GREEN BAY - What began as a rainy first weekend of summer in Green Bay, is now potentially turning into a weekend of hazardous weather, according to the National Weather Service Green Bay.

The cold front that had settled in Green Bay is shifting down toward Illinois, and in its place, a warm front is coming up from southern Wisconsin, according to Roy Eckberg of the National Weather Service Green Bay.

Along with it, the warm front could bring showers and thunderstorms. Around 1-3 inches of rain is expected, and the warmer it gets, higher the chance of severe storms, Eckberg said.

Several periods of thunderstorms are possible between Friday and Saturday night. Any of those periods of storms could contain heavy rainfall, leading to minor flooding, said Tim Kieckbusch of the National Weather Service Green Bay.

Sunday appears to be the best day this weekend for those hoping to enjoy some time outside. Although there is still a chance of some showers and storms on Sunday in northern Wisconsin, Kieckbusch said.

What's the flood risk in Green Bay this weekend?

If the showers and thunderstorms come with heavy rainfall, some localized urban street flooding and ponding of water is possible on the roads. There could also be rapid rises in ditches and creeks, and the larger rivers may have elevated water levels, according to Eckberg.

"There's some potential for some flooding on the East River, especially up by Greenleaf down into Green Bay Area. At this point, water levels should support maybe some minor flooding," said Eckberg. "Chances of flooding on the Fox River are pretty low. That river is regulated by ... dams between Green Bay and Appleton and they are preparing for the anticipated water coming down the river over the next day or two."
