Hagerstown mayor, city council set rules for transient housing tenants

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — An ordinance is in place at city hall for those receiving temporary housing assistance in Hagerstown.

The restrictions stem from a hotel emergency last year on the Dual Highway at the APM Inn and Suites. The building was condemned after an electrical fire.

But now Hagerstown says that anyone receiving vouchers for a transient residence must follow strict regulations on electrical appliances in the unit and observe limits on occupants sharing the home.

“We had units with no sprinklers,” Mayor Tekesha Martinez said. “That creates safety issues so it was important for mayor and council to put an ordinance together.”
