Harris Hill Pool has a leak; could close soon

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) Harris Hill Pool, located in Chemung County and owned and operated by the Chemung County Government, has a leak that can’t currently be found and may have to close for repairs. According to an email from County Executive Chris Moss sent to county legislators and obtained by 18 News, the pool may have to be drained and concrete cut through on the pool’s shallow end to find and fix the leak.

Sign-ups soon available for Harris Hill Pool swimming lessons

Moss noted in his email that 6-19 had record crowds due to the current heat wave.

A decision on how to move forward has not yet been made, but if the leak is in a hard-to-reach place it may require substantial concrete cutting and repairs.

There are currently no estimates about when the closing and repairs could commence, and no estimate for how long the repairs might take. Crews will have to find the leak and determine why it’s happening before an accurate estimate can take place about cost, timing, and length of closure.

A heat wave begins for most of the Twin Tiers today

Here is the unedited email message Mr. Moss sent to county legislators:

06/20/24, 10:11 AM:

Please be advised that earlier this date I was contacted by Buildings & Grounds in reference to the shallow section of Harris Hill Pool which has a substantial water leak that cannot currently be located.  Due to the fact that the majority of the infrastructure for the pool is encased in concrete, this issue proposes a major challenge of not only finding the leak but a strategy to repair the leak once located.  We may have to close the entire pool depending on what the final outcome of the cause is due to the type of heavy duty equipment that would be needed to cut through the concrete to access return piping.  Additionally, yesterday set a record for the number of individuals who visited the pool in recent years.  It’s unfortunate this has occurred during the current weather situation, but Buildings and Grounds is on top of it and will advise as soon as a solution is rendered.
