Hate crimes continue to rise in Los Angeles

Hate crimes in Los Angeles are continuing to rise, including a 17% increase in 2023 alone, according to a report in Crosstown L.A.

While Black Angelenos were targeted more than anyone else, a dramatic spike affected the Jewish community after the October attack on Israel by Hamas and the ensuing conflict in Gaza.

LAPD Hate Crimes Coordinator Det. Orlando Martinez told Crosstown that the fighting prompted a “humongous increase” in reported hate crimes.

In October 2023, “the city tabulated 41 anti-Jewish, 11 anti-Arab and three anti-Muslim crimes,” Crosstown reported.

“All told, there were 108 hate crime reports in October, far more than any other month this decade,” the report added.

The 2023 increases align with a similar uptick of 18% in 2022. That year, in addition to the Black and Jewish communities, Asian Americans were disproportionately targeted, with hate crimes against them at their second-highest level ever.
