Heading to Rockford's first ever Pride Parade? Here's what you need to know

Thinking of heading to downtown Rockford Saturday for the city's first Rockford Area Pride Parade?

Here's what you need to know.

When do the festivities start?

The public is invited to attend the flag raising ceremony in honor of LGBTQIA+ veterans at 8:30 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Hall, 211 N. Main St.

Parade participates will begin to line up at 10 a.m. along Seventh Street. The parade will start at 11 a.m.

Where will the parade begin?

The parade route will begin on East State Street at Charles Street, marching west. The route continues over the State Street bridge and turns north on Main Street and ends at Park Avenue (Beattie Park).

Will there be speakers?

Yes. At 10:45 a.m., Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara will read the Pride Month Proclamation and deliver brief remarks. He will be followed by U.S. Rep. Eric Sorenson, D-Moline, and Andrew J. Mertzenich, Rockford Area Pride Committee chairman. Speeches will be made on the main stage in front of Maze Books, 406 E. State St.

What is the theme of this year's celebration?

Celebrate, Remember, Unite!

"This theme embraces the fact that Pride is a celebration of person, being, love, and expression; but, we remember our history and struggles, and unite to continue the fight for equality and progress," according to organizers.

Who will be participating in the parade?

Who are the parade marshals?

Krystal Ball, Phyllis Gallisath, Bill Stein, and Kevin Stites.

How long will the parade last?

The route will be blocked off until 1 p.m.

What if it rains?

The parade will take place rain or shine. In the event of dangerous conditions, the parade may be postponed briefly until it is safe to proceed.

Will there be a party after the parade?

Yes. The Pride Alley Party featuring nearly 100 vendors, live music, food trucks, drinks and entertainment will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. at North Third and East State streets, north of the Office Nite Club.

Are both events family-friendly?

Yes. Police will be present at both events.
