Those advisories are in place for most of the week with heat index values expected to hit or even surpass 100 degrees. Nationally, tens of millions are under dangerous heat warnings.

Residents are being advised to stay hydrated, remain indoors and in air conditioning, and watch out for children, neighbors, and pets.

Cooling centers are also available across the region at senior centers, libraries, and government centers for those who don’t have access to air conditioning.

“With temperatures expected in the high 90s, we urge our residents to stay indoors or make time for breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.,” said Robert Shively Jr., public safety director in Cumberland County. “It is extremely important if you are driving with your children or pets to check the back seat every time you leave your car, and don’t forget to check on elderly parents or neighbors.”

Shively added, “if you see anyone experience a heat emergency, contact 911 immediately.”
