Heat may hit 100 this weekend; free fans available

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Many people are going to try to beat the heat this weekend as the heat index is supposed to hit over 100 degrees.

For some living without air conditioning, these conditions seem almost unbearable.

“My thermostat right now is sitting like at 90. So it’s 90 inside the house and 90 outside,” said Sherita Adams. “It’s extremely hot and frustrating.”

Adams says she has lived this way for over thirty days at Tanglewood Apartments.

This weekend temperatures are expected to keep rising, which could be dangerous for those without air conditioning.

MLGW says keeping a small fan running in a room can give the sensation that it is five degrees colder than the actual temperature.

Neighborhood Christian Center says they have a limited number of fans available on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you do have a fan, for maximum usage make sure that the room is dark, the fan is in a window, and ice is sitting in front of it to help blow cooler air.

The Shelby County Health Department says this heat can be deadly. Last year, one person died.
