Heat wave: Places to cool off in Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson counties, what to know

Trisha Palmer with the National Weather Service at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport said the forecast shows highs in the 90s through Tuesday.

A high of 93 is expected on Saturday, 94 on Sunday, and up to 96 on Monday and Tuesday.

"These temperatures may pose a higher risk of heat-related illnesses for those sensitive to heat or spending extended periods outdoors," said AnMed Doctor of Emergency Medicine Tara J. Drew.

"Cooling stations are an ideal place to go if you don't have air conditioning or if you've spent time in the heat and have started to experience symptoms," Drew said.

"We strongly recommend residents visit these cooling stations," Drew said.

Contact local 2-1-1 for assistance and referrals to cooling centers, according to the National Center for Healthy Housing.

Drew urges residents to take extra precautions to protect themselves.

"Minimize outdoor activities, avoid direct sunlight, wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and use sunscreen if you plan to go outside," she said.

Places to cool off in Anderson

Wren Park, located at 111 E. Whitner St. in Anderson, has a Splash Pad, which features an underground water display that shoots up from the ground when the water jets are active.

Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their children.

The park is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.Sunday hours of operation are from noon to 2:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Kid Venture 2.0 Splash Pad

Kid Venture 2.0 Playground and Splash Pad is at KidV at the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Complex at 7 Jim Ed Rice Pkwy.

The Splash Pad is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It features an 80-inch long and 35-inch wide splash pad with six vibrant, tall rose petal structures that release water from above and spout water from the ground.

The entire splash pad is fenced in and sits right next to a path along the pond, where ducks and geese are.

"It’s a great place to beat the heat," said Anderson County Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism Division Glenn Brill.

YMCA Aquatics Center

The Anderson Aquatics Center, located at 201 E. Reed Road, has an outdoor, zero-depth entry splash pad, a pool with two slides, including a toddler-sized frog slide, that may be utilized once children have passed the swim test, and several splash play features.

It also has a 25-yard lap pool with a temperature of 81-84 degrees and eight lanes. The shallow end is 4 feet deep and slopes down to 9 feet at the deep end.

Activities include the Makos swim team, water fitness, lap swim, and swim lessons.

There is also a separate shallow pool for children and beginners and a hot tub for relaxation.

Pools are free for members to enjoy, and lifeguards are always on duty.

The pool hours of operation are as follows:

Open regular hours through July 31.

Closed: July 4.

Hours of operation:

Monday to Friday: 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Sunday: 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Places to cool off in Spartanburg

Spartanburg County has many splash pads residents can check out. These pads provide a fun and refreshing way for residents to cool off during the hot summer months. Each pad has various features and designs for adults and children to enjoy.

Stewart Park

Stewart Park is located at 500 Highland Avenue in Spartanburg and is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day.

Barnet Park

Barnet Park is located at 248 E. Saint John St. in Spartanburg and is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tyger River Park

Tyger River Park is located at 195 Dillard Road in the Town of Duncan and is open through Labor Day.

McKinney Park

McKinney Park is open through Labor Day at 231 E. Hayne St. in Woodruff.

Airport Park

Airport Park is located at 500 Ammons Road. It is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until Labor Day.

Water Park in Spartanburg County

Shipwreck Cove is located at 119 S. Spencer St. in Duncan.

The park features a water slide, a massive pool, a lazy river, and a splash pad area for children. Park hours and admission prices are on the park's website.

Places to cool off in Greenville

The Greenville County Aquatic Complex, located at 2700 W Blue Ridge Drive, has an enclosed public 50-meter pool and an array of swimming activities, from recreational swimming to instructional classes or joining the swim team.

The complex is open during the following hours:

Monday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Discovery Island Waterpark

Discovery Island Waterpark, located at 417 Baldwin Road, Southside Park, in Simpsonville, is open Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The waterpark features a giant tube slide at the top of a 25-foot tower, a FlowRider Perpetual Wave ride for older kids, and a 4-tier Splash 'n Play Structure in the zero-depth section of the main pool for younger children.

Kroc Center

Kroc Center, located at 424 Westfield St., is open from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The aquatics facility features a six-lane lap pool, zero-entry pool, water park features, and a two-story slide.

Otter Creek Waterpark

Otter Creek Waterpark is located at 101 W. Darby Road and is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The park features a 7,000-square-foot leisure pool with a beach-style shallow entry area, a kiddy slide, a slide tower with a 32-foot body slide with long twisting tubes, and a 2,400-square-foot splash pad that offers jets of water shooting from the ground.

YMCA of Greenville

The Greenville area YMCA is located at 723 Cleveland St. and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The YMCA of Greenville offers a wide range of options for individuals and families to stay cool and enjoy the summer.

Aquatics Centers feature lap pools, leisure pools, water parks, and slides.
