HPD: Man and woman arrested after standoff at park, facing burglary charges

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Police say a man and woman are facing burglary charges after a standoff situation at Willow Park and burglary on Friday morning.

Huntsville Police identified the pair as 23-year-old Daniel Val Trevino Fain and 51-year-old Charlotte Anne Vanhouden. Both will be charged with second-degree burglary.

The department said Fain was hospitalized after being taken into custody due to a medical condition. Vanhouden has been booked into the Madison County Jail.

A spokesperson for HPD said they responded to a call on the south end of Bailey Cove around 9 a.m. The call stated there was a suspicious vehicle in the area, which News 19 later found out was a gray Volkswagen Passat.

An officer nearby tried to stop the Volkswagen, but police say the vehicle did not stop, and it turned into a “slow-moving pursuit.” The driver eventually stopped near Willow Park.

A woman, later identified as Vanhouden, who was driving the suspect vehicle was taken into custody, and the man, later identified as Fain, who was a passenger in the vehicle ran into a bathroom at the park on Aftonbrae Drive. As of 11:27 a.m., the man is in custody.

Officials believe the woman in custody may be the man’s girlfriend.

News 19 crews on the scene saw a gun being pulled out of the bathroom.

Crisis negotiators were on the scene for a while trying to get the man out of the bathroom. Authorities assumed the man might be armed because the homeowner who called about the burglary said a gun was missing.

HPD asks that people avoid the area around the park at this time, as they continue trying to get the man to come out. A large section of Bailey Cove Road is closed due to this incident.

The spokesperson said the public was not in any immediate danger as there is a secure perimeter.
