Can you hunt raccoons in Wisconsin?

(WFRV) – Ever go outside to throw out some trash only to be greeted by a family of raccoons? Some may have wondered, is it legal in Wisconsin to shoot them?

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a website dedicated to information about wild animals that some may describe as nuisance. Multiple animals are on that list, including raccoons.

The DNR says that they can live almost anywhere and will eat almost anything, and because of this, they do well in urban areas. Access to human-supplied sources of food was one of the reasons listed by the DNR as to why they can thrive in those areas.

However, it is mentioned that raccoons carry many diseases that can affect human and/or pet health.

Below are some of the ‘nuisance management techniques’ that the DNR listed:

  • Remove potential food sources such as open garbage cans and pet food bowls

  • Hang bird feeders where raccoons can’t access them and clean up the spilled bird food

  • Keep buildings raccoon-proof by securing access to holes and broken windows. Keep chimneys closed with appropriate materials (hardware cloth, commercial cap, etc.)

  • Repel raccoons from your garden by installing single wire electric fence set at six inches or a double-wire electric fence set at five and twelve inches

  • Trim trees so they don’t overhang your roof, prune overgrown bushes and remove or elevate woodpiles

  • Landowners are not required to have a hunting or trapping license to shoot or trap raccoons on their own property.

The DNR also provides a fact sheet regarding raccoons. The sheet says that raccoon hunting and trapping is legal year-round on your own property.

There is no need for a DNR license, but it is advised to check with the local government to make sure residents are adhering to local ordinances.
