Identification made on 61-year-old drowning victim pulled from Millerton Lake near Fresno
The Fresno County Coroner’s Office has identified a 61-year-old man who drowned at Millerton Lake on Sunday.
Steve Marquez of Fresno was pulled from the lake about 20 miles north of Fresno around 5:40 p.m. and was given life-saving measures before being pronounced dead. The coroner confirmed his identity Monday afternoon.
According to the lake’s supervising ranger, Marquez was pulled from a section of unguarded shoreline and hadn’t been wearing a life jacket.
The fatal incident was one of several water-related deaths reported in June in the Fresno area.
Earlier this month, a 23-year-old man died while wading through knee deep water in the San Joaquin River at Skaggs Bridge Park near Kerman. According to witnesses, he stepped off a shelf in the river bed and into deeper water. He did not how to swim and was not wearing a life jacket, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.
Within days of that death, a 16-year-old drowned after jumping out of a pontoon boat at Shaver Lake. He was separated from his personal flotation device before going under water.
And just just week, another teenager drowned after she fell into the Kaweah River in Tulare County.
