Improvements coming to Missouri Route 43 bridge over Elk River, MoDOT says

McDONALD COUNTY, Mo. — MoDOT officials say huge improvements are coming to a stretch of Missouri Route 43 in McDonald County.

Specifically, the 43-Bridge over the Elk River a few miles outside of Anderson. The current structure is more than 60 years old and bears the weight of more than 1,500 vehicles each day according to MODOT.

The lead engineer of the project told us Friday, the plan is to build a brand new bridge and add a series of new signs to the area. Designs and funding should be approved by the end of the year and will cost more than $5 million.

“It’s taken a beating over the years from the traffic and the flooding — it’s just to the point where it’s in need of replacing, it’s needing more frequent maintenance, it’s time to replace it,” said Craig Switzer, MODOT Engineer / Project Leader.

Work isn’t expected to begin until next spring and is expected to cause several road closures.
