Incarcerated persons attack guards in St. Louis City and County jails

ST. LOUIS – Prosecutors in St. Louis City and County have charged two incarcerated men for allegedly attacking guards at their respective municipal jails.

The earlier incident occurred on Sept. 10, 2023, at the St. Louis City Justice Center, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement.

Police claim William D. Brandon, 24, punched a Justice Center employee while she was bringing him water. The incident was recorded on surveillance video. The guard was treated at Barnes Jewish Hospital and released.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Brandon with one count of third-degree assault.

Brandon has prior convictions for domestic assault and assault. A city judge signed an arrest warrant for Brandon on June 10, with no bond allowed.

The other incident took place on April 16, 2024, at the St. Louis County Jail, according to the St. Louis County Police Department’s probable cause statement.

Police claim corrections officers went to Demetrius Strother’s cell for a reported broken sprinkler. When the guards arrived, Strother sprayed them with an unknown liquid through the open food port. The liquid was determined to be a combination of urine and feces.

Police claim Strother admitted to breaking the sprinkler in his cell to lure the guards. He said he scooped his own feces out of the toilet and into a shampoo bottle. He then urinated in the bottle and used that to spray the officers. Strother said he was angry about losing his walk time.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Strother with two counts of endangering a correctional employee and one count of damage to jail property.

Strother is being held for second-degree murder and first-degree robbery for the July 2023 killing of Jaylin Johnson, 19.
