Inmate at Merced County Jail tests positive for Mumps

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – An inmate at the Merced County Main Jail has tested positive for Mumps, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday.

Sheriff’s officials say they received a report from the Corrections Bureau that an incarcerated person was showing signs of a possible Mumps infection in the Merced County Main Jail.

The sheriff’s office says it was later confirmed the person tested positive for Mumps. They were isolated when symptoms began and have remained quarantined. Any incarcerated persons housed nearby are also under quarantine.

Sheriff Vern Warnke says the infected person is being treated.

“Rest assured, we are taking care of it, we are taking care of those affected and we will get through this,” he said in a social media video.

Warnke says more details will be provided as they become available regarding this situation.
