Investigators: Kalamazoo fire ‘suspicious in nature’

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A fire that broke out near downtown Kalamazoo last week is being considered “suspicious in nature,” investigators say.

The fire happened June 11 on Allen Boulevard, destroying three buildings. No one was injured.

According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the blaze started at a vacant home, then spread to two other homes — one vacant, the other occupied.

The fire is considered suspicious because the vacant home where it started didn’t have working utilities, KDPS fire marshals told News 8 Tuesday.

However, they said they have no suspect information, nor do they have reason to believe the fire was caused by arson.

Investigators added that the June 11 fire has no connection to two house fires that happened in Kalamazoo the next day — though these fires are also considered suspicious.

The June 12 fires happened at vacant homes on Walnut Street and Gladys Court.

A dog detected accelerant at the houses on Walnut and Gladys but did not find any at the homes on Allen Boulevard, according to fire marshals.
