JENNIE: Family Promise of Augusta looking for major donors

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)– Family Promise of Augusta has played an important role in the community since 1998.

It started out as Interfaith Hospitality Network, but they changed the name back in 2012. The program is all about helping families who are homeless transition to permanent housing and jobs and independence by providing support services, like meals and temporary housing.

After operating for 25 years with a network of churches, that rotated housing families on a weekly basis, FPOA now has a permanent home in Martinez.

Executive Director Ginifir Ferguson, and board president David Black are our guests.

David Black: “Last fall, we found a house on Wheeler Road with four bedrooms, which allows us to house four families. And it has a kitchen and a building behind the house, which has our offices in it and the Children’s Day Center.”

JENNIE: And churches take on a week at a time provide dinners?

Ginifer Ferguson: “Correct. So they provide meals. They reach out to their parishioners. And they will bring meals to the family each evening. And they also provide groceries for lunch and breakfast and lunch.”

JENNIE: One of the things you really need is you’re trying to increase your base of major donors?

David Black: “Yes. We have we have found that over the over the years, there have been a few major donors. Some of them have kind of stepped aside because of COVID and where things went. And so we’re really coveting financial support now. We’re looking for some major donors that are in the community that can help us out on a continuing basis.”

JENNIE: You also have a shelter diversion program?

Ginifer Ferguson: “So that started back in 2022. We receive a donation from our national organization, Family Promise. And that was to divert families from coming into the shelter. So it provided, you know, it provides help with utility assistance or rent assistance.”
