A 58-year-old man and a 5-year-old died in a two-vehicle crash Friday on U.S. Highway 84 west of La. Highway 913 in Catahoula Parish, according to a news release issued by Louisiana State Police Troop E.

The release states that Viktoria Jones of Latrobe, Pa., was driving 2018 Kia Soul westbound on U.S. Highway 84 when the vehicle crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2011 Nissan Maxima driven by Fredrick Washington of Jonesville.

Washington was not restrained, and the 5-year-old passenger in the Kia Soul was restrained with a lap belt, the release said. Both sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

The release goes on to state that Jones was not restrained and was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries. Two other juvenile passengers in the Kia were restrained and transported to a hospital with moderate injuries, the release said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Louisiana State Police. The release states that, "Routine toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis."

"While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, distracted and inattentive driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state," the release said. "Louisiana State Police urges all motorists to stay alert while driving.  A lapse in one’s awareness can have deadly consequences.

"While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death."
