Joplin ARRL Club participates in Field Day at Camp Childress

JOPLIN, Mo. — A nearly century-old tradition is helping prepare our area for the worst-case scenario.

The American Amateur Radio Relay League has hosted Field Day since 1933 as a way to focus on disaster preparedness, the furtherment of science, and public outreach. It has now grown into a worldwide event.

Field Day kicks off Saturday, and members of the Joplin ARRL Club say 40,000 people across North America are expected to participate. They said this experience can showcase how amateur radio can be useful in times when other methods of communication may fail.

“40,000 amateur radio operators from around the country will go out and attempt to make contacts in less than ideal conditions using battery power, generators, solar, those kinds of operations with portable antennas, and just see what they can do,” said Jarren Tupper, Joplin Amateur Radio Club.

The event is open to the public and runs all day Saturday through noon on Sunday at Camp Childress.
