Juicy, fresh-picked Georgia peaches to arrive in Michigan Kroger stores for limited time

When it comes to juicy peaches and most fresh fruit, it doesn't get any better than freshly picked.

With Michigan's peach season about a month away, the time is ripe for Georgia peaches. And after last year's devasting 90% crop loss, Georgia expects a bumper crop.

At select Kroger stores across metro Detroit and Michigan, tons of nearly just-picked Georgia peaches in specially packaged crates will be available.

The Cincinnati-based grocer launched its peach program in May, bringing in Georgia peaches for special events. Through August, loads of tree-ripened peaches in 12-pound crates directly from Georgia peach farms — including five-generation Pearson Farm in Fort Valley and Peach County, Georgia — will be available at specific events in select Kroger stores across the state.

Peaches arrive within a week of being hand-picked, said Cam Barrett, Kroger of Michigan corporate affairs manager.

“Kroger’s sweet Georgia peaches are a seasonal experience, from the juicy flavor to total freshness, hand-picked and hand-packed, we know our customers are going to feel just ‘peachy’ over their great taste and new crate size at a wallet-friendly cost,” Barrett said in a news release. “We’re excited to host Kroger sweet Georgia peach events across the area and bring the freshest peaches around, straight from the farm to the truck with guaranteed freshness.”

On Tuesday, Kroger is hosting a Georgia peach event from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the 22801 Harper Ave. location in St. Clair Shores. As part of the event and Kroger’s "Zero Hunger | Zero Waste" efforts, the grocer is donating thousands of peaches to local hunger relief organizations. At the St. Clair Shores store event and in collaboration with U.S. Rep. John James, R-Shelby Township, 5,000 peaches will be donated to Lift Up a Child and Harvest Time Hope Food Pantry.

Kroger also recently donated and distributed 8,000 peaches to Iris M. Becker Elementary in Dearborn.
