Singer Justin Timberlake was arrested early Tuesday on a charge of driving while intoxicated in the Hamptons in New York, according to local authorities.

According to the criminal complaint, the pop star was stopped by police in the village of Sag Harbor just after midnight after he drove through a stop sign and veered out of his driving lane.

The police officer who stopped Timberlake wrote in the complaint that the 43-year-old’s “eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.” The singer, who police said declined a breath test, told the officer that he had one martini, the complaint says.

Citing a source close to Timberlake, NBC News reported that the musician was driving to a friend’s house after dining at The American Hotel in Sag Harbor when he was pulled over.

After being held in custody overnight, Timberlake pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday and was released without having to post bail. His next court appearance has been scheduled for July 26.

A representative for Timberlake did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.

Timberlake, who shot to fame as a member of the boy band NSYNC and has had a moderately successful acting career, has been held to account in recent years for some high-profile controversies involving female pop stars. In 2021, after the “Framing Britney Spears” documentary was released, he publicly apologized to ex-girlfriend Britney Spears for his role in the backlash against her after their breakup. He also apologized to Janet Jackson, who bore the brunt of the criticism over her “wardrobe malfunction” while performing with Timberlake at the 2004 Super Bowl.

In March, Timberlake released “Everything I Thought It Was,” his first album in six years. The album was widely panned by critics and poorly received by fans. He is currently on “The Forget Tomorrow World Tour,” and his next scheduled shows are in Chicago on Friday and Saturday.
