Kansas Humane Society in need of veterinarians

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Humane Society is in need of veterinarians.

The KHS posted to Facebook saying its only full-time veterinarian will be out for some time starting next month, and it’s having a hard time finding a replacement, citing a nationwide vet shortage:

WE NEED HELP FROM LOCAL VETS

Our sole full-time veterinarian & surgeon, Dr. Schad, is having a medical procedure done in early-July and will need time to rest and recover

Despite nearly a year of trying, we haven’t been able to find another full-time vet due to the nationwide vet shortage and DESPERATELY need help from vets in the community to keep our shelter running! We need to keep the flow of animals moving with spay/neuter surgeries, foster appointments, medical rounds, foster visits, diagnosing illnesses, and prescribing medication

We simply cannot go a month without spay/neuter surgeries and need help now more than ever,” read the Facebook post.

Jordan Bani-Younes, the director of communications and marketing at KHS, said that the staff has been looking for a new veterinarian for over a year now.

“We have had several parties already interested, and they’re willing to help us, but obviously they can’t do that on a full-time basis. So, as many vets as we can get to help us out, it’ll help lighten the load on each person,” he said.

Bani-Younes also said that they won’t be able to bring in any new animals from the Wichita Animal Services next door. Nearly 70% of their animals come from the Wichita Animal Services, and about 30% come from owner surrenders.

“We legally have to have every animal spayed and neutered before they leave. We cannot afford to go a month without anybody getting adopted. So it kind of puts us at a standstill if we don’t get this relief help,” he said.
