Kaukauna officials unveil new park featuring accessible playground equipment

KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WFRV) – The City of Kaukauna cut the ribbons for new playground equipment on Friday as it looks to promote inclusivity and accessibility.

La Follette Park was designed in 2023 by Lee Recreation to provide a “space that was easily accessible for children of all ages and abilities,” according to Terri Vosters, community enrichment and recreation director for the city of Kaukauna.

The project was funded entirely through the American Rescue Plan Act, with a total of around $350,000.

According to a release, the playground has a universal swing and lower transfer platforms to help ease into playing structures. The ground surface is rubberized to allow better movement for mobility devices.

The park includes a non-verbal communication sign which was donated by the Fox Valley Autism Treatment Program.

“It’s important to us that our parks are safe, welcoming spaces for everyone in the community,” Vosters said.

Mayor Tony Penterman says “We want La Follette to be a place for residents to come together and enjoy everything the park has to offer.”

The release mentioned that the city plans to install pickleball courts in the southeast corner of the park as well, but no construction date has been set. More information about Kaukauna Parks can be found on the city’s website.
