KBI investigating officer-involved shooting at park in Ottawa County

MINNEAPOLIS, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist law enforcement regarding an officer-involved shooting at the city park in Minneapolis.

A news release from the KBI said around 8:20 a.m. Saturday, the Minneapolis Swimming Pool manager heard three gunshots at Markley Grove Park and called 911.

Five minutes later, at 8:25 a.m., the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and the Minneapolis Police Department were dispatched to the park, where an investigation into the origin of the shots began.

More shots rang out as surveillance was being utilized to search for the origin of the gunfire.

The Kansas Highway Patrol arrived to assist when the shooter, a 46-year-old, ran out of his home. He shot in the direction of police and a KHP surveillance drone.

Officers shot back, and the suspect was hit multiple times.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. The KBI said they are expected to survive the injuries.

No civilians or officers were injured in the incident.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook the Minneapolis Swimming Pool will be closed for the rest of the day.
