Kindergartener, mother hit and killed by school bus in Mamaroneck

A 6-year-old kindergartener and his mother died Thursday after being hit by a mini-bus while walking to school in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

The incident occurred near Mamaroneck Avenue School around 8:30 a.m., when the 68-year-old bus driver turned left on a green light as several people were crossing the street with the walk sign.

The victims, both residents of the village, were laying in the street when first responders arrived. The boy was declared dead at the scene and the woman, 43, was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

Their identities have not been released.

“It appears at this time that this incident was a tragic accident,” the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department said in a statement.

Several students and an aide were onboard the bus, but no other injuries were reported.

“It’s horrifying. School is almost over. There is no reason [for this] to even happen,” Maryann Murphy told CBS New York. “It’s also a reminder for drivers: Slow down. You’re in a school zone. There’s signs posted everywhere.”

Police in Westchester County said the bus driver was cooperating with investigators. There are currently no pending charges against them.

“There is nothing more difficult for a community to experience than the loss of life, and we know that everyone in the Mamaroneck and Larchmont communities is heartbroken by this news,” the Mamaroneck Union Free School District said in a statement. “We also know that the death of a child is particularly difficult for other children to process. At this time, we have informed our staff of this incredible loss, and social workers and psychologists are fully deployed at MAS.”

Thursday was the last full day of classes for schools in the district.
