Lake Travis water levels affecting some businesses, others staying afloat
AUSTIN (KXAN) – It has been a couple of years since Lake Travis has been closer to full than empty. On Tuesday, the lake level is nearly 41%.
The low levels have been hard on some businesses. Lake Travis Waterloo Adventures confirmed that – because of low lake levels – it would not be opening its obstacle course for the 2024 season.
Other businesses on the lake said the press surrounding lower lake levels has been more detrimental than having less water.
“We have a lot of water here to play with still,” said Corbin Cornwell, the owner of Big Tex Boat Rentals, which operated out of Paradise Cove Marina.
“We have seen a lot of negativity, talking about the lake levels being so low. Yes, they are low, but we’re still operational. We’re still doing good. We don’t want people to be afraid to come out to Lake Travis,” he added.
As of last month, only one public boat ramp was open due to low water levels.
Phil Marandola operates Lone Star Boat Rentals out of Paradise Cove Marina as well.
He said some boating businesses might be struggling because of a surge in activity during the COVID-19 pandemic that has since tapered some.
“There’s still a little bit of like price sensitivity, just given the economy and all that kind of turmoil,” Marandola said.
“I don’t think it’s the lake levels at all,” he added. “There’s still places to go wake surfing, there’s still places to jump off cliffs –there’s still all of the fund to be had.”
