Lane restrictions announced for I-83 North in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that there will be lane restrictions in place on Sunday, June 23 and Monday, June 24 on northbound I-83 in Harrisburg.

According to PennDOT, the right lane of northbound I-83 will be closed from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on both June 23 and June 24. The right lane will be closed from the South Bridge to just north of 19th Street.

PennDOT says that closure is so a temporary concrete barrier can be installed along the right shoulder between the bridge and 13th Street interchange.

Once the barrier is installed, drainage work will be performed behind it.

This project is associated with the first two contracts for East Shore Section 3 of the larger I-83 Capital Beltway Project, which includes widening and reconstruction portions of the I-83 roadway, construction of overhead bridges at 29th Street and 19th Street, construction of the new Cameron Street Interchange, removing the 13th Street interchange, and roadway improvements along the Cameron Street, 19th Street and 29th Street corridors.

As part of this project, there may be significant impacts to traffic, including shifts, lane restrictions, and road closures/ detours.

All work on this $154,627,000 contract is expected to be completed by October 2027.

The second East Shore Section 3 contract is expected to be under construction from 2025 to 2028. This will include the widening and reconstruction on I-83, the construction of the 13th Street bridge and approaches, and the construction of the 17th Street interchange and widening 17th Street.
