LAPD IDs officer who killed woman threatening her family with knife

The Los Angeles Police Department has identified the officer who shot and killed a woman who was threatening her family with a knife in Panorama City on Saturday.

Officer Mackey Hurtado opened fire on Joanna Lua, 23, after she allegedly wielded a knife and blocked her relatives from leaving an apartment in the 9400 block of Panorama City.

Officers forced their way into the unit after hearing screams, and once they were inside, Lua refused to drop the knife and charged officers, prompting the shooting, police said.

She was declared dead at a local hospital.

A 10-inch bread knife was found at the scene, and no other injuries were reported, police said.
