Leal Elementary creates mural recognizing dual-language students

URBANA (WCIA) — A school in Urbana has a new mural in their hallways.

This is Leal Elementary’s first mural in four years. This year, they wanted to design something that would commemorate the dual-language students who will no longer be attending the school next year. The mural is created with flags from different countries and tiles to represent each student’s identity.

First-grade teacher Patricia Leon said the mural also creates a welcoming environment for all students.

“All of them are represented — all of the nationalities in the school,” she said. “The kids come and all the branches are open to hold everyone here.”

The dual-language students will be attending Yankee Ridge Elementary in Urbana next year. In January, the school board voted to consolidate the program under one roof.
