Now that the hush money trial is over, the people in former President Donald Trump’s corps of enablers are complaining loudly about the guilty verdict. I agree with them on one thing: The judicial system is definitely broken.

These crimes were committed in 2016. Why were they not brought to trial until now? How was Trump able to conceal, stall and delay legal proceedings all this time? It seems we lack the right legal tools to deal with such corruption. Or do we lack the will to use them? Perhaps both?

Why has a man who has skirted the law so often and for so long been able to dodge accountability until now? He and far too many others have used their wealth and privilege to avoid legal consequences.

For too long we have practiced a double-standard of justice. There is one law for the wealthy and powerful and another for the average citizen.

We need to establish a system that strives to treat all defendants equally, regardless of political affiliations, financial status or whatever position they may hold.

The system, whatever its flaws, has done its work. Trump has been convicted by a jury of his peers. He must face the penalty for his actions, the same as any other citizen.
