LIST: Central Texas schools giving out free summer meals for kids

AUSTIN (KXAN) — School is out for the summer, but that means some children might not have a way to get consistent meals.

According to Feed the Children, millions of kids will go hungry without the free or reduced-price meals they receive during the school year. The organization says one in five American children is food insecure.

Here is a list of school districts in Central Texas that are giving out free meals this summer to children. Oftentimes, no registration or identification is required for kids to grab a meal.

Austin ISD

Austin ISD said it will connect kids 18-years-old and younger and enrolled students with disabilities up to 21-years-old with free summer meals at more than 30 schools.

Kids in the community can enjoy free summer meals regardless of household income and without any registration or identification, according to the district. They do not have to be enrolled in Austin ISD either.

The meals are served in the cafeteria and must be eaten on campus during the designated service times.

You can view all meal sites, dates and times online here. Many campuses started giving out meals on May 28, with some ending on Aug. 2.

Meal services will pause July 1-5 since district offices and campuses will be closed. The schedule and sites are subject to change, according to the district.

Del Valle ISD

Del Valle ISD said it will provide free summer meals to children ages 18 and younger at sites throughout the district.

The locations are listed below, and they will offer meals Monday through Thursday from June 1-27:

  • Del Valle High School

  • Ojeda Middle School

  • Smith Elementary School

  • Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary School

  • Mustang Mesa (Creedmoor, lunch only from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.)

Breakfast will be served from 7 to 8 a.m., and lunch will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meals must be eaten on location, according to the district.

Del Valle ISD said it will share dates and locations for July once the month draws near.

Georgetown ISD

Starting May 28, the school district said it will serve free meals to students who are 18-years-old and younger at select campuses:

  • Purl Elementary: May 28-Aug 9

  • Mitchell Elementary: May 28-Aug 9

  • Cooper Elementary: May 28-Aug 9

  • Forbes Middle School: May 28-June 28

  • Wagner Middle School: May 28-June 28

  • Tippit Middle School: May 28-Aug 9

  • East View High School: May 28-Aug 9

  • Georgetown High School: May 28-Aug 9

Those meals are available Monday through Thursday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The district said participating families do not have to register or provide identification. More details can be found on the Georgetown ISD website.

IDEA Public Schools

IDEA Public Schools said it will give out free meals this summer to any child in the community starting May 28 through July 26 (Monday through Friday), regardless of whether they are an IDEA student.

The meals will include breakfast and lunch and must be eaten in the cafeteria of any IDEA campus. Breakfast will take place from 7:30 to 9 a.m., then lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

You can find an IDEA school near you by typing your ZIP code into this map on its website. Meal services will be closed on federal holidays, as well as July 1-5.

Lockhart ISD

Lockhart ISD Food and Nutrition Services will help out with lunches starting June 3 at the Dr. Eugene Clark Library. Meals will be provided Monday through Friday from 12 to 1 p.m.

Any child 18-years-old and younger can grab a meal.

Manor ISD

The district said it will give out free breakfast and lunch this summer to any child 18-years-old or younger or any enrolled student with disabilities up to 21-years-old. It all starts in June.

Meals will be served at the locations listed below, and a full schedule with dates and times can be found on the Manor ISD website here.

  • Oak Meadows Elementary

  • Presidential Meadows Elementary

  • Manor Middle School

  • New Tech High School

  • Manor Early College High School

All sites will close on June 19 and July 1-5.

The district said kids in the community can enjoy free meals regardless of household income and without registration or identification. Adults can also buy meals for themselves — breakfast for $2.75 and lunch for $4.75.

The district said it’s not allowed to provide bundled meals (breakfast and lunch), multi-day meal packs, to-go meals, weekend meals, or curbside services.

Marble Falls ISD

The district said it will provide summer meals at no cost to kids 18-years-old and younger and enrolled students with disabilities up to 21-years-old.

Three campuses have been designated as distribution sites, according to a release from the district:

  • Highland Lakes Elementary

  • Marble Falls Elementary

  • Marble Falls High School

Marble Falls ISD’s summer meals program starts June 3 and runs through July 18.

Pflugerville ISD

Pflugerville ISD is providing summer meals at seven campuses starting June 3. Any child under the age of 18 can snag a meal, and they do not need to register or be registered in a summer school program.

Children will not need to provide proof of age, income or residence, according to the district. Visitors are asked to sign in at each school for security reasons.

Below is the current schedule. Meal services will be closed on July 4 and 5.

  • Caldwell Elementary: June 3 through Aug. 9

    • Breakfast: 8:30 to 9 a.m.

    • Lunch: 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • Ruth Barron Elementary: June 3 through Aug. 9

    • Breakfast: 8:30 to 9 a.m.

    • Lunch: 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • Bohls Middle School: June 3-27 (Monday through Thursday only)

    • Breakfast: 7:45 to 8:15 a.m.

    • Lunch: 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

  • Wieland Elementary: June 3-18 and also July 8-23 (Monday through Thursday only)

    • Breakfast: 7:30 to 8 a.m.

    • Lunch: 10 to 10:30 a.m.

  • Timmerman Elementary: June 3-27

    • Breakfast: 7:45 to 8:15 a.m.

    • Lunch: 10 to 10:30 a.m.

  • River Oaks Elementary: June 3-7; June 10-14; June 17-20; June 24-27

    • Breakfast: 7:30 to 8 a.m.

    • Lunch: 11 to 11:30 a.m.

  • Weiss High School: June 3-19 (Monday through Friday); June 20-27 (Monday through Thursday only)

    • Breakfast: 7:45 to 8:15 a.m.

    • Lunch: 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Round Rock ISD

Round Rock ISD said 12 of its campuses will provide children who are 18-years-old and younger and students with disabilities up to 21-years-old with free summer meals starting June 3 through Aug. 2.

Services will be available Monday through Friday with meals to be eaten on-site. Families who wish to participate don’t have to apply, register, be registered in a summer school program or provide identification.

The district recommends that parents call the schools to confirm dates, times and details of the meal service, as some schedules could change.

San Marcos CISD

San Marcos CISD will serve free breakfast and lunches Monday through Thursday starting June 3. Children 18-years-old and younger can participate.

The school district is not only serving meals at schools, but also has a few off-site locations like churches and libraries. You can view locations and their schedules in the image below.
