TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida residents looking to get a head start on lobster season got good news this week when Governor Ron DeSantis announced an additional day has been added to the 2024 recreational spiny lobster mini-season.

The mini-season — set for Wed., July 24, and Thurs., July 25 — will start 10 days earlier for Florida residents on Sun., July 14. The regular commercial and recreational lobster season will begin on Aug. 6, 2024, and end on March 31, 2025.

DeSantis pushed for protesters’ arrests without probable cause, ex-official says in lawsuit

DeSantis announced the additional day while speaking in the Florida Keys.

“You know, we’ve got a lot of tourists that come to do [the mini-season], which is fine. It’s good for restaurants, it’s good for hotels, all these other things,” he said. “But we also want to make sure Floridians have adequate opportunity.”

DeSantis added he hopes Florida residents participate in the July 14 date and that they “have fun with it.”

In addition, the Florida governor announced the prize for the 2024 Lionfish Challenge, which is running through Sep. 2, 2024.

Participants of that challenge who reach the Tier 1 prize for harvesting 25 lionfish in the recreational category (or 50 pounds of lionfish in the commercial category) will not only receive a commemorative coin but will also be allowed to keep two additional spiny lobster per day during the Lobster Mini-Season.
