Lone Goat English pub opens in downtown Detroit, inside historic Metropolitan Building

The Lone Goat English pub is now open on the ground floor of the historic Metropolitan Building in downtown Detroit.

Drawing inspiration from public houses and taverns of London, the Lone Goat — at 33 John R St., just off Woodward Avenue and across from The Brakeman — serves classic pub fare, paired with British and domestic draught beers, cocktails and spirits. The restaurant is from the Detroit-based Roxbury Group and its Treefort Hospitality arm.

“We really wanted to develop an experience that drew from the historic attributes of the space and complimented the physical character of the Metropolitan Building,” said Roxbury President James Van Dyke in a news release. “A genuine English pub was a great fit in a building that already looks like a medieval castle and, in our view, was an offering that was lacking in the marketplace.”

The Lone Goat is open for lunch and dinner daily and offers a menu of English favorites, including bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, fish and chips, and Welsh rarebit. Its pub fare ranges in price from $9 for fish chowder and Welsh rarebit to $17 for fish and chips and $19 for shepherd's pie.The restaurant's name, Van Dyke said, comes from an "old joke that is a favorite around the Roxbury Group. If you catch us at the bar, we’d be happy to tell it.”
