Major water main break occurs in Maryland Heights

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – Crews are on the scene and hard at work as a major water main break occurred in Maryland Heights early Friday morning.

Authorities say they received a phone call about the break a little before 3 a.m. as a lot of water was gushing out from the break site on McKelvey Road between Redcoat Drive and Roth Hill Drive, south of Dorsett Road. Missouri American Water crews are on the scene, saying they believe a 20-inch main broke and will require significant repairs.

Traffic is being detoured due to pavement damage to McKelvey Road in the area and a stretch of McKelvey will be shut down in both directions for several hours. Dorsett Road will remain open.

Crews have the water shut down here so they can get a better idea of what they’re dealing with and repairs can begin. Those crews have been out at the scene for hours, getting all of the valves shut off to stem the water flow.

Maryland Heights police have had to stop some vehicles from driving over the area where the break happened, including, at one point, a bi-state bus.

Crews expect the roadway to be shut down for much of the day as they make repairs on the busy roadway. Missouri American officials say some of the 45 customers in the area will have their water service impacted. No injuries have been reported.

Missouri American says they aren’t certain what caused the break but that the broken main was originally installed in 1961.
