Man with 5 felony convictions charged in deadly 2023 shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Nearly a year after a man was gunned down in a Southwest Memphis neighborhood, a career criminal has been charged in his death.

Jerome Hightower, 57, who has five previous felony convictions, is facing charges of second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The victim was shot in the 4700 block of Horn Lake Road on June 25, 2023, and pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to police, witnesses identified Hightower as the shooter. They said Hightower got out of a white van with a rifle and shot the victim once and then chased him around the van and shot him again.

Witnesses said the victim fell to the ground, and Hightower kicked him in the face.

Police said Hightower pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2008 and was sentenced to five years in prison. In 2019, Hightower pled guilty to aggravated assault and received a four-year sentence.

Hightower was taken into custody Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
