Man arrested after Avondale shooting leaves 1 dead and stray bullets hit nearby home

A man has been arrested on five counts including second-degree murder involving suspicion of shooting a person several times during a confrontation in Avondale around 1:40 a.m. Monday morning, police documents stated.

Eduardo Granados said he was walking from his house to his girlfriend's house when he saw the victim on the other side of the road yelling and behaving aggressively. He believed the victim was on drugs, according to arrest records.

Granados said he aimed his .45 Glock handgun at the victim when the victim stepped into the street in Granados' direction. Police documents said the distance between the north curb, where the victim stepped off, to the south curb, where Granados was walking, was about 68 feet.

Claiming the victim “came at him,” Granados fired his gun multiple times. He said the victim asked, “What are you shooting at?” and continued to come forward, at which time Granados fired more shots until he was out of ammunition and saw the victim fall to the ground.

Granados left the scene, stating his intention was to call the police when he got to his girlfriend’s house. Avondale Police arrested Granados, with the handgun in his possession, near Avondale Boulevard and Thomas Road.

Two witnesses saw the incident from their backyard, according to court documents. One witness told police he saw the victim yelling in the street when a man drew a handgun and fired several rounds toward the victim, court records stated.

The witness said the victim took several steps toward the subject, the subject fired several more rounds and the victim dropped. According to court records, the witness said the shooter did not appear to say anything before the shooting.

Five rounds also struck a nearby house with one sleeping resident inside, according to court records. No injuries were caused, but the resident desired to aid in prosecution.

Granados stated he shot the victim in self-defense, officials noted.

Police said based on the location of the dead victim, the lack of weapons on the victim’s body, the distance between the victim and Granados and descriptions of Granados from witnesses, there did not appear to be any reasonable suspicion of serious physical injury at the time he fired the gun.
