WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A man has been charged in the chase that injured an Augusta officer on Monday.

According to court documents, 44-year-old Allan Firman has been charged with the following:

  1. Battery on LEO; Bodily harm to county or city officer on duty

  2. Flee or attempt to elude; Drive wrong way into opposing lane/intersection

  4. Possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant

  5. Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body

  6. Transporting an open container

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office says the chase began around 6 p.m. when deputies responded to U.S. Highway 400 at the Greenwood County line after they were notified that a fleeing vehicle was entering Butler County. A Greenwood County deputy had tried to stop the driver of a pickup truck pulling an empty boat trailer that had struck another vehicle, but the driver fled.

The truck reportedly drove into oncoming traffic in the construction zone near Beaumont, where traffic is reduced to one lane and controlled by a traffic light. The pursuit in Butler County began at Pickrell Road at the U.S. Highway 54/400 junction.

The driver continued west on U.S. 400, swerving into the median to avoid a deployed tire deflation device and driving into eastbound lanes, still heading west towards Augusta. The driver hit a set of stop sticks deployed but continued west into the city.

The Augusta Department of Public Safety says Augusta Officer Kyle Sisco was in his patrol vehicle at U.S. 400 and Walnut, trying to clear traffic from the intersection when the suspect crashed into the back of his vehicle.

Todd Ackerman, Director of Public Safety for Augusta, says EMS took Officer Sisco to a Wichita hospital in serious condition. He has been treated and released and is now resting at home.

Firman was seriously injured but was treated and released.

The woman who was with Firman was also taken to a Wichita hospital for potentially serious injuries, but she has also been treated and released. She is not being charged, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Kansas Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
