Henderson man accused of firing over 100 shots in apartment during drug-induced shooting

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Henderson man is accused of firing over 100 shots in his apartment while in a drug-induced episode where he believed he was being robbed, according to Henderson police.

On Friday, June 14 at around 8:45 p.m., the Henderson police and fire departments were called to a condominium complex in the 2200 block of West Horizon Ridge Parkway after reports of multiple gunshots.

The person reporting told dispatch that they heard multiple gunshots and saw someone fall out of a window from the second story of an apartment building, an arrest report said.

Several witnesses also reported hearing several gunshots before a man jumped out of a window and ran before collapsing. The man, identified as 45-year-old Joseph Ebner, had an injury to his head and told a witness that someone was chasing him and that he needed help, police said.

Ebner told one witness “They are following me!,” and “Watch out they will shoot you!” The same witness noticed that Ebner’s pupils were dialed and he had white powder around each nostril, according to the report.

When police arrived, they found him lying on the sidewalk and he was taken to a local hospital. Police found the broken window Ebner jumped out and below it an AR-style rifle. The rifle was later determined to have an empty 30-round capacity magazine, police said.

Police searched Ebner’s apartment where they found several spent rifle and handgun shell castings throughout the apartment as well as bullet holes in several of the walls. They also found an open safe containing rifles, according to police.

Police found about 112 spent handgun and rifle casings, the report said.

Due to the bullet holes in the walls, police searched the surrounding apartments for possible victims however, there was no one in any of the apartments, police said.

Justin Goodman lives in the building where it happened and told 8 News Now that he came home to a crime scene on Friday night.

“It’s really bizarre really. They mentioned several shots fired our immediate thought was heaven forbid someone was shot they informed us no one was hit but my neighbor fell out of a window,” he said. “I’ve lived in Las Vegas my entire life I’ve never had anybody throw themselves out of a window. Certainly not in Henderson. It’s certainly out of the ordinary surreal.”

At the hospital, Ebner initially told police that he was robbed by two men and fired the weapons in self-defense. He said that he had been speaking to two people online and they were coming over, according to police.

Ebner admitted to being addicted to cocaine and ingested about four grams over the course of the week with close to one gram being ingested earlier in the night. He then went on to say that a group of men, who he could not describe, broke into his home to rob him. He said they had lasers on their weapons and they entered through multiple points of the apartment, the report said.

He then emptied a handgun and transitioned to an AR-15, emptied three magazines, and discharged about 60 rounds. At some point, he “escaped” and jumped out of a window. Ebner said there were as many as five suspects, police said.

Ebner was arrested and taken to the Henderson Detention Center where he faces the following charges:

  • 112 counts of Discharge Firearm into an occupied structure

  • 2 counts of Discharging Weapon Where Person is Endangered

  • 1 count of Prohibited Person Own/Possess a Gun
