Man hit, killed by train in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities are investigating a fatal train collision in Carlsbad that left one man dead Tuesday evening.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, a call came in around 5:45 p.m. reporting an incident in the area north of the Carlsbad Village Coaster Station, near the Coast Highway bridge.

Responding Carlsbad Police officers and fire department personnel found a male victim who had apparently been struck by a northbound North County Transit District (NCTD) COASTER train. The man did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Carlsbad Police requested the the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit (TEU), which investigates incidents along the routes of the NCTD.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the man, as well as determine his cause and manner of death. His name has not yet been released.

This comes less than a week after another person was killed by a Sprinter train in neighboring Vista. That incident is also being investigated by TEU.
