MANITOWOC – Manitowoc has one more title under its belt: Specialty Malt Capital of the World.

Mayor Justin Nickels read a proclamation in honor of the designation during the Common Council meeting Monday, which also listed the many ways Briess Malt & Ingredients has contributed to growing Manitowoc's economy.

Briess, which owns the iconic malt plant in downtown Manitowoc, has the highest volume of specialty malt of any malting company in the world and is a leading producer in the billion-dollar specialty malt industry, the proclamation states.

CEO Craig Briess said his company produces specialty malt used in craft beers and other products made in Manitowoc, throughout Wisconsin and the United States, and in 25 other countries in the world.

"It's not just a reach or some empty words," Briess said. "Next time you drive down Washington Street and at the end of the road you see a large mural, you're really seeing the recognition and celebration of our great city as the place where American craft beer begins."

Federal bill to rename Kiel Post Office moves on to U.S. Senate

A federal bill to rename the Kiel Post Office in honor of Trevor Casper has been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives and sent on to the Senate.

Casper, a Kiel native, was fatally shot on March 24, 2015, while he was performing his duties as a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper. He was the youngest police officer to die in the line of duty in Wisconsin at age 21.

If passed, the bill would designate the U.S. Post Office on Fremont Street in Kiel as the "Trooper Trevor J. Casper Post Office Building."

The bill was introduced Sept. 26, 2023, and sponsored by U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman. It has been received by the Senate and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
