Maryland weather: Cloudy Wednesday followed by showers

May 28—Partly sunny weather is forecast for the rest of Tuesday in the Baltimore area following storms on Memorial Day.

Skies are expected to get cloudy again Wednesday before more showers start in the afternoon. A 70% chance of rain is expected after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with between a 10th and quarter of an inch of rain in the forecast — though a thunderstorm bringing more rain is possible as well. The showers are expected to cease by about 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

Tuesday's sunshine comes after wet weather throughout Memorial Day, ending with evening thunderstorms causing fast winds that brought down trees in the area.

Some quarter-sized hail was spotted near Mount Airy, while trees blew down on Interstate 83 near the Baltimore Beltway, according to the National Weather Service, which also noted a 911 call center reported a house in Towson had been struck by lightning.

Lightning also struck a large Dawn Redwood at Cylburn Arboretum, destroying the tree, according to the nonprofit that maintains the public garden.

"The tree literally exploded throwing wood and branches all over the lawn," Cylburn Arboretum Friends, the nonprofit, said in a Tuesday post on Instagram.
