MCSO warns of warrant scam calls

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a scam in which someone calls impersonating law enforcement and threatens to arrest citizens on an outstanding warrant.

Officials say a victim was contacted by phone Wednesday and told there was a warrant out for her arrest. The scammer claimed to be Detective Bonner or Detective Cortez, instructing the victim to withdraw funds to pay for the warrant or she would be arrested.

Concerned family members alerted law enforcement who located the victim before she withdrew any funds.

After law enforcement spoke to the scammer, they changed the name and badge number used in the scam; they are now claiming to be Deputy Michael Davidson with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say to hang up if you get a similar call, especially if you have had no recent contact with law enforcement and would have no reason to have a warrant.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public that MCSO, other law enforcement agencies and government agencies will never call you and request you withdraw funds from your account; they will also never contact you by phone to demand payment of fines or warrants using gift cards, wire transfer or any form of electronic currency.

If you’re unsure if it’s a scam call, contact the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office at 970-242-6707 to verify if they are trying to contact you.
