Mid-South Food Bank, church team up to give out free food

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis students may be out of school, but there’s still a need for summer meals. Now, the Mid-South Food Bank is providing free food, and one South Memphis church is stepping in to help.

Morning View Baptist Church Pastor Ronald Claxton says church members filled tables with food from the Mid-South Food Bank. Those who pulled up live all over South Memphis, in need of fresh food as students are home for the summer.

“It’s vital to the community. We do it once a month. I wish we could do it once a week,” Claxton said. “Normally we have meat. As I was passing out forms I informed people we don’t have meat today and they said we want whatever we have. We are going to stay in this line and take whatever you have. That’s how important it is to them.”

Memphis Shelby County Schools says about 55% of students are considered “economically disadvantaged.” So, for many students, summer break means no guaranteed meal.

The Mid-South Food Bank’s mobile pantry is changing that. The free mobile pantry will be in six locations all over Memphis on Saturday.
