President Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated Claudia Sheinbaum's victory, set to be the first female president of Mexico, and assured that his mission was accomplished during his morning news conference on Monday.

“I feel very happy. We are finishing our term, I am going to retire, and with great satisfaction I will be able to say when I hand the flag over to Claudia: 'mission accomplished,'" he said.

The president applauded the fact that the Mexican people gave their vote to a woman.

“Imagine what it means to hand over the presidency to a woman? After 200 years of only men ruling Mexico, since the first federal republic, since the first president of Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria, who was president from 1824 to 1828. From then until 2024, 200 years,” he noted.

He emphasized that the result of the elections is that of a people with a conscience.

“Millions of citizens participated and freely decided on the future of our country. I was very pleased with the behavior of the people. It was reaffirmed that the people of Mexico are a conscious and politicized people,” he noted.
