Update on a Mobile mother’s battle with cancer

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — It has been three months since everything changed for a young mother and member of the News 5 family’s daughter, Madeline Petite.

It was three months ago that Madeline Petite, the 28-year-old daughter of News 5 journalist Leon Petite was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer at 24 weeks pregnant and then gave birth to her son Harrison Crew.

At that time, it was still an uncertain battle, but how is she now?

An Update on Madeline Petite

“Everyone talks about how strong I am… but you’re going to have a hard day,” says Madeleine Petite.

Those close to Madeline say she has come a long way since the day she was diagnosed: She’s been through the premature delivery of her baby, she’s been through radiation therapy on her brain, and through chemotherapy for other parts of her body, where cancer has spread.

The fight against cancer

The fight against cancer is never easy. With every new scan, there are ups and downs. She’s learning how to deal with the “downs.”

Her most recent scans have shown a significant reduction in the size and number of tumors in her brain, but a scan this week wasn’t as encouraging.

“There were some new spots, so that was very hard to hear,” Madeleine said.

Those around Madeline say that she continues to face her fight with strength, grace, and faith.

Staying strong

And Madeline is quick to point to two blessings that get her through the fight: her family and son, Harrison Crew, and her faith.

The biggest blessing is her son, Harrison Crew. He was delivered early so that Madeleine could begin chemotherapy.

“He was tiny!” says Madeline. “A little over 2 pounds.”

But, after 3 months in the NICU, Harrison is healthy and up to about 9 pounds! And this week, Madeleine was able to take him home.

“He is the most amazing gift I’ve ever been given. My heart gets bigger and bigger and it makes me want to fight even more,” she says.

While she waits to learn more about her treatment options, Madeleine focuses on what’s good in her life: her family, her friends, the strangers who pray for her after reading about her story on social media. She has a firm grip on her faith and she wants people to know that her days are not filled with fear, but with hope.

“If I wake up and it’s 12:01, it’s another day He gave me and I’m thankful for it and I’m thanking Him for it, no matter what,” says Madeleine.

With Harrison in her arms, she talked about what she wants him to know about this journey when he gets older.

“I want him to know that he fought, and his mom fought. I want him to stay close to God. I want him to know and understand that God is amazing and the true miracle worker.”

As she looked into her little baby’s face, Madeleine softly said, “We’re gonna be okay. We’ve got this. No matter what, we’re gonna be okay.

“I’m always going to hold onto that faith.”
