Muscabus names Driver of the Year

Magaly Hernandez loves to be on the road and not stuck in an office or warehouse. And that is what she likes best about driving for MuscaBus, the City of Muscatine’s Public Transit System and that has led Hernandez to being named 2024 MuscaBus Driver of the Year, according to a news release.

Hernandez represented MuscaBus and the community of Muscatine at the Iowa Public Transit Association (IPTA) Driver of the Year ceremonial dinner held June 7 in Ames, Iowa.

“Magaly is from Muscatine and fluent in Spanish, which is a great help to our passengers,” said Amy Fortenbacher, transit supervisor. “Magaly is a great driver and a great addition to our team.”

The criteria to be considered for driver of the year includes working at least 780 hours, having no fault accidents or moving violations, work at least 95 percent of all scheduled work, and having no documented incidents or complaints.

“Magaly met and exceeded these criteria,” Fortenbacher said.

Hernandez, who is from Muscatine, has been driving for MuscaBus for the last five and a half years. Before that, she worked at DB Shenker for almost 10 years.

“I like their flexible schedule,” Hernandez said when asked why she applied to be a MuscaBus driver. “I am able to finish work early enough to enjoy personal activities. I love spending time with family and friends. I also like watching movies and TV series with my kids.”

She adds that she also enjoys cooking and is a member of the Muscatine Walking Club.

Tonisha Hollingshed represented MuscaBus this year in the IPTA Roadeo.
