Mystery surrounds Scottsdale Police detective's death

Jun. 19—Mesa Police will be leading the investigation into the death last Thursday, June 13, of a Scottsdale Police detective in what was described as a "critical incident" near Scottsdale Airport.

Scottsdale Police posted on social media that Det. Ryan So "succumbed to duty-related injuries sustained earlier this evening and has passed away."

According to the post, the officer "honorably served the City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Police Department for nine years and ended his watch as a member of the Special Assignments Unit."

He also served in the United States Navy.

"This is an unimaginable tragedy for both Ryan's family and his police family at SPD," the post said.

Scottsdale Police gave no other details about the detective's death, although Scottsdale Police Assistant Chief Rich Slavin was quoted as saying that So needed emergency assistance around 7:30 p.m. June 13 near 78th Street and Greenway Road.

He also was quoted as saying that So served with Scottsdale Police for nine years and leaves a wife and three children. Slavin also there was no threat to the community and no suspect in the case, according to Channel 3.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Detective So's family, his team, and everyone across our police department."

No further details were released.
