Newport-area crash involving gas-powered bike leaves Wilmington man dead Thursday

A 22-year-old Wilmington man died Thursday afternoon after his gas-powered bike crashed into a car near Newport, according to Delaware State Police.

The man's name will be released once his family is notified.

The 22-year-old was riding west on a four-stroke mini gas-powered bike along the shoulder of Route 4 approaching Silview Avenue, police said. At the same time, a gray 2009 Audi A4 driven by a 43-year-old Wilmington woman was heading west on Route 4.

The woman turned right into a private parking lot in front of the bike at 2:21 p.m., according to police. The bike crashed into the car, police said, and the impact threw the 22-year-old off of the bike. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 43-year-old woman was not injured.

The shoulder of Route 4 west was closed off by cones for nearby construction at the time of the crash, police said.

The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Master Cpl. J. Forester at 302-365-8485 or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
