Oakland Roots set to play at Oakland Coliseum

(KRON) – The Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Authority has approved the Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Clubs to play their 2025-2026 soccer season home matches in the Coliseum Stadium.

“The Roots and Soul Soccer Team, a beacon of unity and passion, has captured the hearts of Oakland residents and soccer enthusiasts nationwide. Their commitment to community engagement, diversity, and excellence on the field aligns perfectly with the values that make Oakland a remarkable city,” Oakland’s Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan said, “As we look ahead to 2025, I invite all Oakland residents to celebrate this milestone. The Roots and Soul Soccer Team’s presence at the Oakland Coliseum will foster unity, pride, and economic empowerment.”

“Great news Oakland soccer fans!” posted Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao on X. “Oakland Roots Soccer Club and Oakland Soul Soccer Club will play their 2025/26 season at the Oakland Coliseum. The Roots and Soul radiate Oakland pride in the community and every time they step on the pitch.”

KRON4 reached out for a statement from the Oakland Athletics on the announcement and received the following response:

“We have shared with the City of Oakland and Alameda County that we are open to being co-tenants of the Coliseum with the Roots/Soul in 2025. We look forward to meeting with the Roots soon.”

The Oakland A’s are attempting to extend their lease for the next three years before leaving for Las Vegas.

The Oakland Roots are hoping to finalize an agreement to play at the Coliseum next year. The Oakland A’s said the last meeting went “well” and the group will continue discussions over the next two weeks. The city is asking that the A’s leave behind their branding and logo when they officially leave.

The city also is asking the team to have an active role in bringing an MLB expansion team to Oakland. According to Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert, the county has suggested that in return for a lease extension, the team should sell their stake in the Coliseum to the African American Sports and Entertainment Group.

The A’s and the City of Oakland will meet again on April 2.
