One injured, fuel spilled after semitruck flips in Penn Township

One person was injured and the York County Hazmat team was called for a fuel leak after a semitruck rolled in Penn Township Friday morning.

The crash was reported around 11:24 a.m. on Friday, June 21 at the intersection of Karen Lane and Gitts Run Road in Penn Township, according to 911 records.

Ray Kinsey, the assistant chief of the York County Hazmat team, was in the area when the rollover crash occurred, and said he arrived on scene to find the tractor-trailer on its side near the intersection.

The driver of the tractor trailer was seen transported in an ambulance on the scene, but Kinsey was not certain on the extent of their injuries, noting the driver was up and walking around when he arrived.

Fuel was leaking from a large saddle tank on the bottom of the truck, Kinsey said, and crews worked to build a dam out of absorbent to block the fuel from leaking into a bean field on the side of the road.

The York County Hazmat team was requested to assist Hanover Area Fire & Rescue, due to the tanks containing several hundred gallons of fuel, Kinsey said.

Mike's Towing responded to the scene with spill response and rotator vehicles, which will offload the fuel onto their vehicle and right the tractor-trailer, Kinsey said.

The truck was believed to be hauling primarily car lifts, Kinsey said, with no hazardous cargo aboard.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, Kinsey said. Crews were expected to be working for several hours to offload and right the truck, he said.

Fire police were directing traffic in the area, with Gitts Run Road blocked from Karen Lane to York Road during the crash.

Hanover Area Fire & Rescue was assisted by the York County Hazmat team, Porters Volunteer Fire Company, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company, and Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Company.

Penn Township police are investigating the crash.
